The Maya Abdominal Massage works on the abdomen and pelvis to help bring the uterus into its proper position, soften musculature,
align the pelvis and release tension in the diaphragm and trunk.
Uterus
The uterus is held in position by 10 ligaments, which allow it to stretch and grow during pregnancy and move freely as the bladder and bowel fill. If these ligaments weaken or loosen, the uterus can move out of position. Up to 80% of women are estimated to have a displaced or fallen uterus as a result of trauma (surgery, a fall, difficult labour or birth, emotional tension following rape) or lifestyle (wearing high heels, dancing, chronic constipation).
When the uterus is out of position, the vital flow of blood and lymph (the fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells) will be compromised in the pelvic area. If the uterus is folded, the blood and uterine lining which are usually expelled during menstruation may also be left to pool in the uterus. This can lead to problems with fibroids, endometriosis, painful cramping and hormonal imbalances.

Diaphragm
When the diaphragm is tight it can reduce blood flow to the lower half of the body by as much as 40% and may adversly affect heart rate and breathing.
Oesophagus
A constricted diaphragm will also squeeze on the oesophagus (which passes through it) and lead to digestive problems including chronic indigestion and heartburn.
"You're a great therapist. Teaching people to love themselves is surely the highest form of healing and since love puts you in a place where your body can heal, doing what you do is probably the most humble form of healing."
